Outrageous Fortune: Meditations on Living Through a Pandemic and Troubled Times
0Navigating through troubled times is often fearful, terrifying, and disappointing. We want to make decisions that move us along, but we are also fearful about making the wrong choice. Especially, during this pandemic, we are fearful about our lives being touched by others, but with a deep desire to stay connected. These meditations trace the emotional upheaval of our struggle as well as provide hopeful solace in the struggle itself. Philosophers, sociologists, psychologists, spiritual advisors, and theologians are useful sources for this journey. In my endeavor to clarify and advance the singularity of our struggle, I have gleaned from many of those listed above. But most of all I have endeavored to dive into my own vulnerability, connecting myself to the human struggle for security and love.

Jamal and the Large Mirror: Volume 2
0Jamal was a fifth grader living in Brooklyn, New York, with his mother and older brother. The two boys’ father was killed in a helicopter accident during his military service in Iraq. Before he left, though. Jamal’s dad gave his youngest son some life lessons, including “If it’s to be, it’s up to me,” about taking responsibility for one’s personal choices and actions. Using a large mirror in their home, Jamal’s father also told his son that there was a large community behind them that they couldn’t see but was giving the mirror gazer strength and support. The community that Jamal ultimately envisioned included his father as well as the late Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., former President Barack Obama, Vice President Kamala Harris, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and others. The goal of the mirror lesson was to enforce in Jamal the assurance that he was not alone, even when his father could not be with him physically.
This wonderful book is enhanced by illustrations by Brian Rivera. The story acknowledges the realities of a father’s leaving to go to war and the impact his death has on his family. The author also illustrates that an important component in the process of resolution, as well as in healing to process grief, is to acknowledge the feelings that everyone experiences. The mirror serves as an excellent tool to help the protagonist cope, not only when his father leaves but throughout his life. While the book would benefit from some additional editing, the vital life lessons, as well as the compassion and integrity of Jamal’s father, are reflected throughout this inspirational tale. Seals’ poignant yet encouraging story is well worth reading.

Tattered Edges
0As early as six, I began to emulate the essance of a boy trying to mimick my brother standing to pee; failing miserably. At twelve, an older neighborhood boy tried to rape me; all I knew, at this point, was no man would ever control me. Continuing in my tom-boy ways, my mother was appalled. The year that followed, puberty struck, remaining to be the most tragic day of my life. However, my athletic ability was revealed that summer during a softball game when I heard, “You should be playing on the other field with the boys!” My naked reflection in the mirror became problematic. My male alter-ego emerged. I bound my chest, changed my name, and headed to Southern California. I didn’t hate life or who I was, only what I was. This was just the begining, so hold on tight.
