Moments–they’re brief yet so important. We plan, celebrate the important times in our lives: A wedding, the birth of a child, a long-awaited trip, holidays, moving to a new place, starting a new job–any major changes we experience.
an excerpt from the book
Some books tell a single story from beginning to end. Others offer something more intimate: a collection of moments, emotions, questions, memories, and observations that together create a portrait of human experience. “Reflections of My Soul” by Deborah Yvonne Sullivan belongs to the latter. Through a collection of evocative poems and short reflective pieces, Sullivan explores the many emotions that exist beneath the surface of everyday life. Proudly published by Citi of Books, the book is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retail platforms.
Deborah Sullivan is a retired elementary education teacher. She taught for thirty-two years. Deborah has published children’s books and several published poems. She lives on Long Island in New York along with her wife, Barbara. Together they have six children and six grandchildren. Deborah enjoys writing, reading, spending time with family, and taking walks on the beach. She is also an avid Harry Potter fan!
The book moves freely between memories of childhood, experiences of love and loss, spiritual reflections, moments of loneliness, dreams, personal struggles, and glimpses of renewal. Its writing is deeply personal yet broad enough to invite readers to recognize pieces of their own experiences within its pages. Rather than offering easy answers, Sullivan allows each reflection to linger, encouraging readers to pause, remember, and look inward.
This book is not built around one continuous plot. Instead, it unfolds as a series of individual reflections that examine different aspects of life and identity. The collection opens with “The Girl in the Mirror,” in which the narrator confronts her own reflection and realizes that although the woman looking back shares her features, there is still something about herself she does not fully understand. This opening establishes one of the book’s central ideas: the continuing journey toward self-understanding.
“Reflections of My Soul” is compelling because it feels less like a book that tells readers what to think and more like an invitation to think and feel alongside the author. Sullivan writes about experiences that are deeply personal, but the emotions behind them are widely recognizable. Readers can find themselves reflected in memories of childhood, questions about identity, the search for love, the pain of loneliness, the difficulty of recovery, and the desire to find peace.
The collection also demonstrates how differently the same life can be viewed from different moments in time. Childhood memories can become sources of comfort years later. A difficult experience can reveal strength that was previously hidden. A relationship can change the way someone understands love. Even something as ordinary as a sunflower or a walk along the beach can become a doorway into larger questions about faith, mortality, memory, and purpose. Sullivan’s reflections repeatedly turn ordinary observations into opportunities for deeper thought.
Perhaps most importantly, the book recognizes that personal growth does not have a finish line. Pieces such as “A New Me” suggest that the person we see in the mirror can continue to change through the years, carrying both the marks and the wisdom of everything that came before. “Reflections of My Soul” ultimately offers readers a quiet space to examine their own memories, emotions, relationships, and hopes. Deborah Yvonne Sullivan’s collection reminds us that every life contains stories worth remembering, feelings worth acknowledging, and new chapters waiting to be lived.
