Haley Koth from The US Review of Books (USRB) reviews “Recovery Happens Through Christ (My Story of Abuse, Alcoholism, and Adultery)” by Marilynne Harrison. The reviewer commended the book, stating, “She documents her struggles with sobriety, which parallel her grappling with letting go and trusting God.”

The author, Marilynne Harrison, and her husband live in northern Wisconsin, in the small town of Shell Lake. This story is taken from the journals of the author, which serves to provide an example of a person who overcame a blatantly wrong lifestyle and today lives a clean lifestyle, worships God, and treasures her fellowships with other like-minded believers.

In this memoir, Marilynne, the author, recounts her experience of abuse at the age of five by her father. Later, her life was consumed with drugs, nicotine, alcohol, and sexual activities. She got married to another alcoholic. This is a raw and vulnerable account of a woman’s search for her genuine self and her place in the world.

Marilynne was given a new chance with the birth of her son, who was “the missing piece of who I was.” She started walking away from her past and started walking toward God. However, Marilynne fell back into her bad habits and walked away from God, the God who cleansed her soul and restored her body from falling apart. Her body started giving up due to alcohol and drugs. But the glory of God chose no one and helped her still.

The book “Recovery Happens Through Christ (My Story of Abuse, Alcoholism, and Adultery) by Marilynne Harrison,” aims to encourage that it is not too late to repent your sins and walk towards Him. Despite your past, He will fix you. No one can change what is behind; however, let us await His hand leading us each step of the way into the future.

God wants us to recover from our dead souls, strengthen our faiths, and restore the beauty of our lives with Him. There is no division amongst believers, as the Bible teaches forgiveness and showing mercy to one another.

Here is an excerpt from the US Review of Books that highlights:

“This is a raw and vulnerable account of a woman’s search for her genuine self and her place in the world. She reveals her past abuse, struggles with sobriety, and yearning to find a deeper meaning in her life. The diary entry format, which begins toward the middle of her account, helps to give a more authentic record of her daily ups and downs. She honestly recounts her fears, hopes, and frustrations. Her candor throughout this memoir provides relatability to anyone who has experienced similar struggles and evokes empathy among those who have not led a similar life.”
