Derk enjoyed a multifaceted career, starting in hotel management, then reinventing himself multiple times with the DOD, higher education, and finally his own coaching business. He holds two postgraduate degrees, an undergraduate degree, and military leadership training.
Derk credits his achievement to his ability to stay focused and performance-driven while being strong and pleasant, kind without letting his kindness be mistaken for weakness, and humble without being seen as timid and proud but never arrogant, all couched in God’s blessings.

Derk Mattocks was raised during a time when the fight for social justice was at its peak in the United States. Instead of shying away, he learned to challenge the circumstances and not let them dictate how he would live his life. Of course, Derk would say that while he does not consider himself a fighter, there was something innate that led him to the top of a career field that was inaccessible to people of color during that Jim Crow period, a period meant to marginalize African Americans by denying them the right to vote, hold jobs, get an education, or other opportunities. This was by no means an easy task, considering the opposition he faced trying to bring some normalcy to such a chaotic and dangerous environment in which he lived.
This book was co-authored with his youngest daughter, Jessica Nuñez Muttocks, who became one of his inspirations for writing the book.
