“I had the opportunity to work with a VP who was very tough and dedicated to her work. She didn’t just give feedback to my supervisor; she would correct my writing and personally call me into her office to ask if I was offended by her corrections. I told her I appreciated it because I would rather know what I was doing wrong than not know.” – a phrase from the book

“To Be Or Not To Be An Admin” by Teekwa P. Scarborough exhibits the author’s unexpected twist of faith into becoming an administrative assistant. Initially, the author aspired of becoming a businesswoman, potentially exploring event planning, but life circumstances—including becoming a young single mother and the loss of one of her twins—shifted her focus

Despite her family’s strong support system, entrepreneurial aspirations were not encouraged, leading the author to navigate college indecisively. After taking on the role of an administrative assistant without prior experience, she found herself challenged and took advantage of training opportunities, rapidly acquiring technical skills and seeking additional responsibilities. She applied her learning to a variety of projects, showing initiative and willingness to go above and beyond.

The turning point came when she discovered an interest in Information Technology (IT) while exploring options at Monroe College. She pursued the degree, graduating with a 4.0 GPA, Cum Laude. This achievement demonstrates that her initial assistant role served as a steppingstone, helping her discover a field that aligned with her aspirations.

Teekwa filled this book with her experience and gave office tips and strategies to her readers. Accepting one’s mistakes is also a factor in improving oneself. While she faced challenges securing an IT role afterward, the experience exemplifies resilience, adaptability, and the value of using any position as a platform for growth and career development.

Life could take you anywhere and will take you somewhere you truly belong.
