“The Making of Darth Zaner” by Lorin J. Zaner is now available for purchase

To his enduring credit, Lorin took the time to learn the science, to learn the craft to save people whose lives were otherwise destined to be lost to life imprisonment. The people through the decades Lorin has saved makes him an insurmountable figure in the practice of law.

Some careers are built from carefully planned beginnings. Others take shape through unexpected turns, difficult decisions, persistence, and a willingness to keep moving forward. In “The Making of Darth Zaner,” Lorin J. Zaner looks back on nearly five decades as an attorney and shares the experiences, people, cases, adventures, and lessons that shaped his professional and personal life. Proudly published by Citi of Books, this is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retail platforms.

Lorin Zaner is a retired defense attorney from Toledo, Ohio, whose career lasted almost fifty years. He became a public defender in 1976 and started his own law practice in 1985, The Law Office of Lorin J. Zaner, representing clients in Ohio and Michigan and in federal courts. He has two daughters, Allison Bucko and Ilana Sullivan and two sons, Scott Roman and Greg Roman. Lorin resides in Toledo with his wife Eileen. This is his first book.

The book is not simply a record of a legal career. It is a candid collection of memories that shows how a young man from Toledo, Ohio, who once studied chemical engineering, eventually found his way into the courtroom and built a life around the law.

The book moves through decades of legal practice, from juvenile court and domestic relations to criminal defense, personal injury, malpractice, real estate, bankruptcy, contracts, and other areas of litigation. His career eventually included representing clients in Ohio, Michigan, and federal courts.

These experiences are presented through individual stories rather than a dry professional history. Some cases are serious and emotionally difficult, while others contain the kind of unexpected situations that could only come from years spent inside courtrooms and law offices. There are stories involving unusual evidence, difficult judges, memorable clients, courtroom surprises, interns, prosecutors, opposing attorneys, and moments when a little humor helped break the tension.

“The Making of Darth Zaner” offers a distinctive look at what nearly fifty years in the legal profession can look like from the inside. Readers interested in law will find courtroom experiences, legal strategies, professional lessons, and stories about the realities of practicing law. Readers who are simply interested in memoirs may find something else: a portrait of a man whose career developed through unexpected opportunities, relentless preparation, memorable encounters, family sacrifices, humor, and a willingness to keep learning.

Most importantly, the memoir does not separate the lawyer from the person. Alongside the cases are stories about family, friendships, travel, mentorship, mistakes, victories, disappointments, and the lessons accumulated over a lifetime. Zaner ultimately reflects on both his accomplishments and the importance of remembering that there is more to life than work.

With its mix of courtroom stories, professional experiences, personal adventures, humor, and reflection, “The Making of Darth Zaner” becomes more than the story of how one man became a lawyer. It is a look back at the making of a life, told through the people who shaped it, the cases that tested it, the experiences that broadened it, and the lessons that remained after nearly fifty years in the profession.
