Citi of Books was honored to showcase the work of its talented authors on the international stage, presenting a diverse range of titles at the 2026 Beijing International Book Fair. This prestigious global event provided an invaluable opportunity to connect these works with readers, publishers, and literary professionals from around the world while celebrating the power of books to bridge cultures and inspire meaningful conversations. Among the featured works that drew attention from attendees was “The Lazarus Syndrome: Why Can’t I Die?” by Jaime Reyes.
“The Lazarus Syndrome: Why Can’t I Die?” by Jaime Reyes is a fascinating nonfiction work that explores one of the most mysterious and controversial phenomena in modern medicine: the spontaneous return of life after a person has been declared dead. Commonly referred to as the “Lazarus Syndrome” or “auto-resuscitation,” this rare event has puzzled medical professionals, researchers, and families for centuries. Drawing from extensive research, documented case studies, medical literature, and his own personal experiences, Reyes examines the phenomenon from multiple perspectives. The book moves beyond a simple medical discussion and ventures into broader questions about life, death, consciousness, and the limits of human understanding. Through a blend of investigative reporting, memoir, and scientific inquiry, the author challenges readers to reconsider what they know about mortality and survival.
What distinguishes this book from many medical explorations is its deeply personal dimension. Reyes is not merely a researcher examining a distant subject; he is someone who claims to have experienced Lazarus Syndrome events multiple times throughout his life. This unique perspective allows him to approach the topic with both intellectual curiosity and personal investment. The result is a compelling narrative that combines medical mysteries, historical accounts, technological advancements, and autobiographical reflections into a thought-provoking examination of one of humanity’s greatest questions: what truly happens at the boundary between life and death?
Jaime Reyes has enjoyed many career changes. He was born in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, several decades ago. His family moved to the U.S. mainland when he was nearly eight years old. He spoke no English but in a matter of months was fluent enough to become a straight-A student. It helped that he learned to read Spanish at age three and continued to feed his voracious appetite for words in the new language.
After graduating from Thomas A. Edison High School, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served honorably in Vietnam as a military intelligence agent and analyst. After completing military service, he started his own business, which he managed successfully for seven years. He sold the business and pursued the career of his dreams in law enforcement. He worked with the Philadelphia Police Department for five years and then the Philadelphia Office of the Sheriff as a deputy sheriff. He served for twenty-five years, the last ten years as a supervisor.
The book is equally compelling because it encourages readers to think beyond conventional boundaries. It examines how advances in technology, neuroscience, and medicine continue to reshape our understanding of life and death while acknowledging that many questions remain unanswered. By combining scientific inquiry with personal reflection and extraordinary real-world cases, Reyes creates a narrative that is both informative and thought-provoking. Whether readers approach the book from a scientific, philosophical, spiritual, or personal perspective, “The Lazarus Syndrome: Why Can’t I Die?” offers a unique opportunity to explore one of the most intriguing mysteries of human existence.
As BIBF continues to unite readers, writers, and publishers across continents, Citi of Books remains proud to contribute to this global celebration of storytelling and knowledge. We look forward to the continued growth of international literary connections at BIBF 2026 and beyond, where books serve as bridges between cultures, ideas, and generations.
