What happens when a retired journalist refuses to believe that his best friend’s death was just an accident? That gripping question is exactly what pulls readers into “The Cleansing”  by Robert Pugh—one of the intriguing titles being showcased at the 2026 London Book Fair. From the very first chapter, the story invites readers into a suspenseful investigation led by Howard Ewing, a man whose instincts as a journalist refuse to fade with retirement. If you love mysteries that slowly unravel layer by layer, this is the kind of book that keeps you turning pages long after you meant to stop.

What makes this book especially engaging is how real it feels. You’re not just reading about a mystery—you’re stepping into Howard’s world of late-night stakeouts, lingering questions, and quiet determination. The novel captures the atmosphere of old-school investigative journalism so vividly that you can almost picture the dim newsroom lights and hear the rustle of notes being pieced together into a story that someone might not want uncovered. It’s suspenseful, yes, but it’s also deeply human.

Fans of classic detective stories and thoughtful thrillers will find a lot to love here. The book blends the tension of a mystery with emotional depth, exploring friendship, loyalty, and the stubborn drive to uncover the truth. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy stories where the investigation is just as much about understanding people as it is about solving the puzzle. Think of it as the kind of mystery that lingers in your mind even after you’ve closed the book.

Visitors browsing the shelves at the 2026 London Book Fair should definitely keep an eye out for Robert Pugh’s “The Cleansing.” It’s the sort of novel that reminds us why we love a good mystery in the first place—because sometimes the search for truth is messy, complicated, and deeply personal. If you enjoy stories filled with suspense, heart, and a relentless quest for answers, this book might just be your next favorite read.
