Los Angeles Times Festival of Books Recap: Joseph Conway’s Book Distribution of “After the Ride: Crime and Compassion”

As the pages of history turn, we find ourselves reflecting on a remarkable milestone—the 30th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the largest book festival in the United States, held on April 26-27, 2025. Set against the stunning backdrop of the University of Southern California campus, this annual celebration of literature brought together thousands of book lovers, authors, and industry professionals for a weekend brimming with literary magic.

Attracting around 150,000 attendees from Southern California and beyond, the festival was a testament to the enduring appeal of literature and the community it fosters. Each event, each conversation, and each shared moment contributed to a rich tapestry of experiences that celebrated the diverse voices and stories that shape our world.

In collaboration with Citi of Books, the author of “After the Ride: Crime and Compassion,” Joseph Conway, held a successful book signing event during the 2025 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books.

Joseph (JR) Conway, born in Washington DC in 1931. Retired Military, retired Law Enforcement. 12 years Private Investigator and owner of 240 employee security company.

His book was featured by Citi of Books during the 76th Frankfurt International Book Fair last October 2024.

“After the Ride” is a compelling sequel to JR Conway’s previous work, “Greyhound Therapy.” This novel delves deeper into the complex repercussions that small communities face when individuals arrive by bus, whether by choice or circumstance. The story examines the often-overlooked dynamics that arise when people transition from one jurisdiction to another, highlighting the ethical dilemmas confronted by law enforcement and mental health professionals alike.

This story circled on Sheriff Craig Spence, a dedicated lawman grappling with a significant resource shortage and an overwhelming influx of individuals requiring assistance. As he strives to uphold his commitment to public safety, he must also navigate the complexities of this new reality, balancing the demands of his job with the needs of the community. The book paints a vivid picture of Spence’s challenges, as he fights to maintain law and order while also providing support to those who find themselves in vulnerable positions.

“After the Ride” also seeks to answer many of the lingering questions from “Greyhound Therapy,” tying together the fast-paced events and character arcs into a cohesive exploration of resilience and empathy in the face of adversity. Through rich character development and an engaging plot, Conway invites readers to reflect on the broader implications of societal neglect and the human spirit’s capacity to adapt and thrive.
