The author of the book “Blessed Memorial: Imaginings from Lectio Divina,” Paul H. Martin, was interviewed by Benji Cole of CBS Radio. They talked about the in-depth nature of the book’s theme and inspiration during the interview.
Paul H. Martin grew up in Jamestown, a small town in Western New York State. He has been happily married to his wife, Barbara, for 45 years and they have two children together. Paul spent the first 20 years of his career in the bicycle industry, where he worked as a mechanic, salesman, and store manager. In 2000, he transitioned to the field of home construction, focusing on both new buildings and the rehabilitation of older homes. He later worked in a cabinet shop, specializing in furniture repair and antique restoration. During this time, he also developed a passion for crafting musical instruments, including guitars and violins.
“Blessed Memorial: Imaginings from Leo Deina” was inspired from a pack of police arrest records he purchased at a flea market, which led him to explore the lives of young people who had been arrested. After consulting with a friend, Paul decided to use his imagination to create fictional narratives based on real-life experiences, weaving in biblical parables as subtext. The protagonist, Thomas Strongtree, embarks on a journey to understand the stories behind the police records and the people involved.
The title “Blessed Memorial” is derived from a proverb that emphasizes living a good and honest life. The subtitle, “Imaginings from Leo Deina,” refers to a practice of divine reading that encourages readers to engage with scripture in a personal and reflective way. Paul emphasizes that the book is not strictly religious; it offers universal moral lessons that can resonate with a wide audience, regardless of their religious background.
Paul encourages readers to approach the book with an open mind and to seek personal insights from their reading experience. He suggests that the book would be particularly suitable for book clubs, as it can spark meaningful discussions about the themes and characters.
