Will a hundred lifetimes come and go
Before you simply open the door
And leave the cell?

“The Polka Dot Chair: New and Selected Poems” by Michele Heeney is a contemplative collection of poetry that explores the landscapes of nature, spirituality, memory, love, creativity, politics, dreams, and the human spirit. Proudly published by Citi of Books, this is now available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other major retail platforms.

Michele Heeney is an accomplished poet, photographer, and former obstetrics and gynecology nurse practitioner whose creative work reflects a lifelong passion for both caring for people and observing the natural world. Before devoting herself fully to the arts, Heeney spent many years working as a registered nurse and later as an OB/GYN nurse practitioner, serving communities in Pennsylvania and California, including patients through Planned Parenthood and a county hospital caring for Mexican farm workers.

Her experiences extend far beyond medicine. Heeney served with the Peace Corps in West Africa, studied Spanish in Costa Rica, explored the underwater world through scuba diving in Fiji and Micronesia, and lived on a 6,000-acre ranch bordering the Big Sur wilderness, where she worked as a caretaker for a regional park district. These diverse experiences deeply influenced her artistic voice and strengthened her lifelong connection to nature.

The Polka Dot Chair is Heeney’s fourth poetry collection, bringing together her love of lyric expression, vivid imagery, travel, spirituality, and the natural environment into a body of work that reflects both personal experience and universal human concerns.

Rather than following a single narrative, the book unfolds as a series of lyrical reflections that encourage readers to slow down, observe the world more closely, and discover meaning in life’s ordinary and extraordinary moments. The poems range from deeply personal meditations to thought-provoking observations about society, revealing an author who finds inspiration in both the natural world and the complexities of human experience.

Organized into thematic sections—including Spirit, Love, Time, Nature, Art, and Politics—the collection presents poetry that is concise yet rich with imagery and symbolism. Michele Heeney draws upon decades of personal experiences, travel, and her lifelong appreciation of nature to craft poems that invite readers into moments of stillness, curiosity, introspection, and emotional honesty.

Whether reflecting on changing seasons, the creative process, grief, dreams, social issues, or the mysteries of existence, The Polka Dot Chair reminds readers that poetry can illuminate truths that often remain hidden beneath the busyness of everyday life.

One of the collection’s greatest strengths is its imagery. Whether describing spring awakening across the desert, moonlight reflected on rivers, fleeting dreams, or the quiet arrival of peace, Heeney paints vivid pictures that engage both the senses and the imagination. Her poetry encourages readers not only to visualize scenes but also to feel the emotions beneath them.

Most importantly, “The Polka Dot Chair: New and Selected Poems” reminds readers that poetry has the power to reconnect us with ourselves, with nature, and with the mysteries that shape our lives. Through graceful language, thoughtful observation, and heartfelt reflection, Michele Heeney offers a collection that celebrates curiosity, resilience, creativity, and the enduring beauty hidden within everyday experience.
