“Spirit Bow: The Saga of Sean O’Malley” follows Sean O’Malley, whose life is shaped by tragedy after he accidentally kills a young Native American warrior during a hunting trip in 1819. This sets off a series of violent events: his family is killed by the tribe in revenge, and his sister is kidnapped. Seeking a new life, Sean and his father travel west, but Sean’s father is murdered by his uncle, Hatchet Jack. Sean and a Native woman, Chimalis, escape, eventually finding refuge with the Crow tribe, where Sean is adopted and becomes a legendary figure known as Night Wind.

As Night Wind, he seeks to unite the tribes and prevent violence between Native peoples and settlers. However, after the death of his friend Kicking Horse, a series of tragic events unfold, and Night Wind is caught in the cycle of revenge. Despite his efforts to prevent bloodshed, he ultimately cannot stop the violence, which leaves him questioning the possibility of peace.

The story highlights the destructive nature of vengeance and the difficulty of reconciling conflicting cultures. It also speaks to the personal cost of trying to bring about change in a world driven by hatred and mistrust.

Below are some of the readers’ comments about this book:

“…excellently depicted the atmosphere of life in early 19th century America. The harshness of the wild and tense relationships between the generations of settlers and the Native Americans is felt especially when the protagonist lost his family. …a gritty and unflinching novel that focuses on the human will to survive. …will definitely evoke a myriad of emotions from readers. All in all, Spirit Bow is a moving and substantial read from Lettis.” —Five Star Review, Lit Amri, Readers’ Favorite
