Clemente Orlando Oviedo was born in Habana, Cuba, in 1944. He came from a family that practiced Santeria and was, at the same time, thought to be Catholic. From a very young age, he would write for his mother stories having to do with different “oddun” or signs used in the Santeria readings. He would also prepare very long lists of materials needed in ceremonies for idols called “santos.” Additionally, he would write complete books that would describe the materials used in many witchcrafts for spells, the ones used by his mother. He was trained by his mother to pick a variety of plants in the woods and know their curative and/or destructive functions in Santeria and in the spiritual world. His mother also taught him to recognize and look for different soils that are used in Santeria and Paleria for the confirmation ceremonies of kettles for witches and warlocks called “gangas.” This was for a period of over 25 years.
