Colonel Vaughan Witten, the author of the book, was born on February 18, 1935, in Anawalt, West Virginia, in McDowell County, a small coal mining town of about 2000 people. He was born in Martinsville, Virginia, to Arlene Walker Witten and Alphonso Witten, a coal miner and Baptist minister from Anawalt, West Virginia, who died in 2000 and 1991, respectively.
Dr. Witten is a highly accomplished individual with a distinguished background in both military service and academia. He enlisted in the Air Force at a young age and rose to the rank of Command Master Sergeant, earning the Bronze Star along the way. After leaving the military, he pursued higher education, earning two bachelor’s degrees and a Ph.D. in psychology. He then spent 34 years teaching psychology and sociology at various universities. Overall, Dr. Witten’s life is a testament to dedication, hard work, and a commitment to both serving his country and educating future generations.
