“Two Neighborhoods in Harlem: Volume 1” is a memoir. But because of its historical content and many other things, it feels like more than a memoir that only tells the author’s story. Burrell chose this title because Harlem is where he was born and grew up. Being the special place that it is, much has been written about Harlem, and the author would like to add his own personal take on this unique section of New York City. Though known for its lush history, at the same time, Harlem has an image that leaves much to be desired, which the author feels overshadows many of the good things that Harlem represents.

From birth to 8 years old, Burrell lived in a section of Harlem known as Hamilton Heights, and from 8 to 20 years old, he lived in another section of Harlem known as Morningside Heights. Shortly before moving from Hamilton Heights to Morningside Heights, Burrell had no idea that a move like this was in the works, and the realization that Hamilton Heights had become a thing of the past for him shook him to his core. Sadness does not even begin to describe how he felt about being torn away from his beautiful neighborhood and many friends, unannounced and so suddenly. As an 8-year-old, he thought that Hamilton Heights would be where he would always live. But as it turned out, the move was a true blessing in disguise.

“Two Neighborhoods in Harlem: Volume 1” is an engaging, positive, funny, adventuresome, inspiring, and upbeat story about growing up and living in Harlem and New York City, and it has plenty for people from all walks of life. So by the time you have turned the last page, you will have spent time with the author on his many adventures in Berkeley, Oakland, Los Angeles, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Napa, and Sonoma, California; the San Francisco Bay Area; Havana, Cuba; the Bronx, Brooklyn, and New York City; several parts of New Jersey; Tijuana, Santa Ana, and Nogales, Mexico; Hampton, Virginia; South Carolina; Miami; Nogales and Tucson, Arizona. Not only that, but you will have read about the interesting people with whom Burrell has had the pleasure of meeting and knowing. Then too, you will have read about how a kid like him (with his host of early-academic challenges) was able to spend time in so many far-away places and experience so many things (that he would have otherwise missed out on completely) by making this one move from Hamilton Heights to Morningside Heights.
