The World of Fiction and its Subgenres

Are you a fan of enchanted forests, fairytales, unearthly creatures, and magic? How about romance, where the characters are childhood sweethearts, enemies-to-lovers, or have faked their relationship? Or do you like stories that bring you into a new world where people are forced to fight, try to survive in an apocalypse, or harbor hatred towards the government, which has a broken legal system?

From children to adults, there are a lot of people who love to read fictional books. These are books that were completely invented by the writer. It’s not real, though some characters were inspired by real people and real events; that’s just it. Kids and young adults are the ones who enjoy reading fiction the most, as it cultivates their minds and helps them develop their imaginations. Stories such as fairytales, fantasy, romance, etc. are a few of the subgenres of fiction that readers love to read.

What kind of fictional books do you read? Fantasy? Romance? Action? Horror?

Fictional books can be classified into different categories called subgenres. As a result, the reader’s expectations for the setting, characters, plot, and theme are typically met by these works. There is frequent diversity within and even overlap between genres, even though some people may view genre fiction as “boring and predictable” because it adheres to predictable patterns, conventions, and outcomes.

The following are the major subgenres under “fiction”:

  • Action and Adventure Fiction

These works, also called the “male equivalent of the romance novel,” feature protagonists who are cunning, brave, frequently heroic, and occasionally villainous, along with intrigue, heart-pounding action, and exotic settings.

  • Fantasy Fiction

This is a fictional genre that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary ingredient in the plot, theme, and setting. It is different from science fiction and horror as it avoids technology concepts and gruesome plot themes.

  • Horror Fiction

Horror is a literary, cinematic, and television subgenre that aims to frighten, shock, and even repulse viewers. The main goal of a horror story, movie, or TV show is to make the audience feel uneasy by using terrifying events, themes, and visuals.

  • Mystery Fiction

In mystery literature, a crime (such as a murder or a disappearance) is followed from the moment it is committed until it is solved. Because they turn the reader into a detective seeking to ascertain the who, what, when, and how of a specific crime, mystery books are frequently referred to as “whodunnits.”

  • Romance Fiction

This literary subgenre focuses on the plot, which centralizes the development of a romantic relationship between two people. Romance books can be written in any mood or manner, in any location or era, and with varied degrees of sensuality, from mild to scorching.

  • Science Fiction

Science fiction is a time-sensitive subject in literature. It is one of the most creative genres in literature. Sci-fi books introduce readers to otherworldly characters and technologies while taking them on adventures in distant galaxies, submerged worlds, and everywhere in between.

  • Thriller Fiction

Dark, compelling, and suspenseful plots are the hallmarks of thrillers. They seldom have comic components. Any book can create excitement, tension, curiosity, and exhilaration, but because these are the main objectives of the thriller genre, thriller authors have honed their skills to keep readers interested.

Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity.”-G.K. Chesterton
