Karla Sutton McKinney

Karla Sutton-McKinney is a mentor, teacher, poet, writer and now author of her first poetry book Summer of 2020. I have been writing poetry since 1999. My first piece was dedicated to my late cousin, Rashed Omarr Davison, titled Just As I Am.
I reside in Cordova, Tennessee, twenty minutes outside of downtown Memphis. A native of St. Louis, MO, I have been married to Mark A. McKinney for 31 years and have three sons, each is married with growing families. I have four granddaughters and one grandson.. Currently, I am taking a break from teaching after returning to school to become better equipped in advocating for educational equity. I graduated in 2023 with a Master’s degree in Education Policy and Leadership.
I work remotely for Gateway Roofing, LLC in St. Louis, MO. In my spare time I volunteer with The Love Project, helping women who are on the street in Memphis, Advent Presbyterian Mobile Food Pantry, MICAH (Memphis Interfaith Coalition for Action and Hope) and SCVA (Shelby County Voter Alliance). I love the outdoors, reading, cooking, and spending time with family.
I invite you to share my experience with God through this republication of my first book of poetry, based on turbulent events that culminated with the death of George Floyd…while gathering a glimpse into my next body of work, Back-to-the-Beginning: Volume 1 – The Things He Said.
Grab your tea or coffee, settle into your quiet space, prepare your heart and mind, to embrace the work ordained before we were ever known. Consider using this as a Daily Devotional and Enjoy!
