As the pages of history turn, we find ourselves reflecting on a remarkable milestone—the 30th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the largest book festival in the United States, held on April 26-27, 2025. Set against the stunning backdrop of the University of Southern California campus, this annual celebration of literature brought together thousands of book lovers, authors, and industry professionals for a weekend brimming with literary magic.
Attracting around 150,000 attendees from Southern California and beyond, the festival was a testament to the enduring appeal of literature and the community it fosters. Each event, each conversation, and each shared moment contributed to a rich tapestry of experiences that celebrated the diverse voices and stories that shape our world.
This year, Citi of Books was thrilled to be part of this vibrant gathering, where the love for literature was palpable in the air. Whether you were a lifelong bibliophile or a curious newcomer exploring the world of books, the festival provided a unique opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts and share our passion for the written word.
As we look back on this unforgettable weekend, we invite you to join us in reliving the highlights of Citi of Books’ gallery during the 30th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books—a true celebration of the literary arts! A book included in the gallery was “Uprooted” by A.B. Bishop.
In “Uprooted,” readers are transported to a serene country home where Beth and her friend Marie live harmoniously with a menagerie of animals, including dogs, cats, cows, and chickens. On a warm spring evening, Beth finds solace under a majestic oak tree, reflecting on the simple joys of life after a day filled with chores and animal care. With Marie away visiting family, Beth looks forward to a peaceful night of connecting with HAM radio operators, fishing in the nearby river, and indulging in her passion for storytelling. The tranquility of her surroundings and the companionship of her pets create a comforting atmosphere, allowing her to unwind and dream of cherished memories.
However, the calm is shattered in the early hours of the morning when a frantic call comes through on the HAM radio. Beth’s friend, Vet Gary, urgently broadcasts a “Mayday” message, warning of a catastrophe that has plunged the area into chaos and panic. With no clear information about the cause of the destruction, Beth’s heart races as she realizes the gravity of the situation.
The urgency of Gary’s plea to “get somewhere safe now” propels her into action, forcing her to gather her pets and essentials as she seeks refuge in the storm cellar—the only safe haven she can think of. The once peaceful life she knew is about to be irrevocably changed.
As Beth huddles in the storm cellar, the reality of the unpredictable destruction sinks in, marking the beginning of a new and uncertain journey. “Uprooted” explores themes of resilience, survival, and the profound impact of unforeseen events on everyday lives. The narrative captures the emotional turmoil of being uprooted from the familiar and the struggle to adapt to a world turned upside down. Through Beth’s experience, readers are reminded of the fragility of life and the strength that emerges in the face of adversity, as she navigates the challenges ahead while holding onto hope for the safety of her friend Marie and the life they once knew.
