Currently he works as a fellow and assistant Professor of systematic theology at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies (IBCS) at Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans.   Odeyemi is a political activist, analyst, social critic, poet, essayist, theologian and the author of quite a number of published works and books.

“The Mass: Through Him, With Him and In Him (2nd Edition)” delves into the profound significance of the Holy Mass, or Eucharist, through a unique triadic framework. By intertwining Sacred Scriptures, the catechesis of Pope Francis on the Eucharist, and insights from contemporary American theologians, Odeyemi offers readers a fresh perspective on this sacred rite. While many excellent works have explored the Eucharist throughout history, Odeyemi’s engaging language and innovative theological approach breathe new life into the understanding of this great gift, making it accessible to both the faithful and those seeking deeper spiritual insight.

At the heart of Odeyemi’s exploration is the belief that the Mass serves as a bridge between heaven and earth, drawing divine grace into our world while pointing us toward the eternal banquet of life promised by God. He emphasizes that the actions performed during the celebration of the Mass are deeply rooted in biblical understanding, particularly from the Old Testament. This connection not only enriches the liturgical experience but also invites participants to appreciate the beauty, sanctity, and grace inherent in the sacrament, often referred to as ‘the bread of life’ and ‘food for the journey.’ Odeyemi’s work is not merely an academic treatise; it is a heartfelt invitation to experience the transformative power of the Eucharist.

Odeyemi firmly upholds the Church’s teaching that, through transubstantiation, Christ is truly present in the Eucharist under the appearances of bread and wine. This presence is not merely symbolic; it is the real and substantial Body and Blood of Jesus Christ, offered in the sacrifice of the Mass and received as spiritual nourishment in Holy Communion. By articulating this profound mystery, Odeyemi encourages readers to approach the Eucharist with reverence and awe, recognizing it as a source of grace and strength for their spiritual journeys. His insights resonate with the teachings of esteemed theologians, including Charles Cardinal Journet, who eloquently affirms the glorious presence of Christ in the Eucharistic sacrifice.

In “The Mass: Through Him, With Him and In Him (2nd Edition),” John Segun Odeyemi invites readers to embark on a transformative journey into the heart of the Eucharist. By situating the Mass within its biblical context and emphasizing its significance as a divine encounter, he offers a compelling narrative that enriches the understanding of this sacred rite. Whether you are a lifelong Catholic or someone exploring the faith, this book serves as a valuable resource for deepening your appreciation of the Mass and its role in the life of the Church. As you engage with Odeyemi’s insights, you will find yourself drawn closer to the beauty and grace of the sacrament, ultimately enriching your spiritual life and connection to the divine.
