As the pages of history turn, we find ourselves reflecting on a remarkable milestone—the 30th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, the largest book festival in the United States, held on April 26-27, 2025. Set against the stunning backdrop of the University of Southern California campus, this annual celebration of literature brought together thousands of book lovers, authors, and industry professionals for a weekend brimming with literary magic.
Attracting around 150,000 attendees from Southern California and beyond, the festival was a testament to the enduring appeal of literature and the community it fosters. Each event, each conversation, and each shared moment contributed to a rich tapestry of experiences that celebrated the diverse voices and stories that shape our world.
This year, Citi of Books was thrilled to be part of this vibrant gathering, where the love for literature was palpable in the air. Whether you were a lifelong bibliophile or a curious newcomer exploring the world of books, the festival provided a unique opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts and share our passion for the written word.
As we look back on this unforgettable weekend, we invite you to join us in reliving the highlights of Citi of Books’ gallery during the 30th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books—a true celebration of the literary arts! A book included in the gallery was “The Almost True Story of Birds of Paradise” by Carolyn Gora.
Carolyn Gora was a Florida public school art teacher. During her career she taught elementary, middle, and high school students. She also taught elementary education university students how to incorporate art into their classroom lessons. She has been painting animal characters for over fifty years.
“The Almost True Story of Birds of Paradise” is a delightful and imaginative tale designed to engage young readers, particularly the author’s grandchildren. The story begins with a seemingly boring green plant that undergoes a magical transformation into a vibrant Bird of Paradise plant. This enchanting metamorphosis leads to the creation of colorful and exciting birds that embody the beauty of the plant.
As the bird family embarks on their adventure, they encounter a variety of plant friends in a nearby park, each resembling animals with whimsical names. This clever concept not only brings the story to life but also serves as a playful way for children to learn about the wonders of nature and the diverse world of plants. Gora’s whimsical illustrations complement the narrative beautifully, capturing the imagination of young readers and enhancing their understanding of the natural world.
Through engaging dialogue and charming visuals, “The Almost True Story of Birds of Paradise” by Carolyn Gora invites children to explore the connections between plants and animals, fostering a sense of curiosity and appreciation for nature. The book’s blend of creativity and educational elements makes it a perfect read for children, encouraging them to see the beauty in the world around them while enjoying a captivating story.
