Ezra Bayda was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and earned a philosophy degree from Rutgers University. At the age of 26, he became a carpenter and later worked as a general contractor for three decades. He started meditating in 1970 and spent several years in a Gurdjieff community before becoming a full-time Zen student. In 1995, he began teaching and writing. For eighteen years, he and his wife, Elizabeth Hamilton, who is also a teacher, managed the Zen Center San Diego. During this period, he authored seven critically acclaimed, award-winning books, including “Being Zen” and “Aging for Beginners.” He also volunteered for Hospice for ten years. Now retired, he and Elizabeth reside in La Jolla, California, where they teach meditation via Zoom. Ezra enjoys daily ocean walks, cooking, and playing ping pong.
