Every year, the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books becomes livelier and brighter due to the growing number of attendees. From book lovers, casual readers, and literary collectors to authors and publishers, people gathered to celebrate literacy.

The largest book festival in the US opened its doors last April for a glamorous two-day weekend celebration with the bookworms. Held at the University of Southern California, many book enthusiasts, book lovers, and book collectors, as well as writers, established authors, and many more, attended the free event.

A lot of bookfair-goers went by the Citi of Books booth to check for their next read and potential favorite book. One of the books that were chosen is “Life’s Ragin’ Storms” by Dexter G. Harrison. It was displayed on April 20 and 21 at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books at the University of Southern California.

Set in segregated Cameron Parish, Louisiana, this true story follows several African American and white families. The Bartie family takes center stage as we witness their struggles, triumphs, and heartbreak during the Great Depression of the 1930s, leading up to the devastating 1957 Hurricane Audrey, one of the worst in US history.

Through meticulous research and interviews with the Barties, Harrisons, Januarys, Millers, and Nunezes, the author paints a vivid picture of life in this time and place. The story emphasizes the strong family values, morals, and faith that helped these families endure hardship, both from societal restrictions and the fury of nature.

“Life’s Ragin’ Storms” is an inspiring tale that showcases the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It explores how diverse characters navigate their own challenges and emerge stronger.
