The author, Fujie Fukuda, reflects on the passage of half a century since she arrived in America from Japan. As a young Japanese woman at that time, she could never have imagined that one day she would write a book and publish it in English for an American and worldwide audience.

Learning a second language—especially English—has been a significant challenge for her, one she faced later in life as an adult. However, with the support and kindness of remarkable friends, she had the privilege of graduating from college and building a life in her new home.

Now, as she approaches the later stages of her journey, Fukuda feels deeply grateful for the opportunity to make a small contribution to American society by sharing her story. Writing this book has allowed her to reflect on her experiences, and she hopes her words will offer insight and encouragement to others.

A dear friend once spoke about her in a way that touched her heart, capturing a piece of who she is. Although he is no longer with them, she holds his words close and imagines him smiling down from heaven, proud of what she has achieved.

“Kaenju” is a Japanese translation of “Flame Tree” or “Royal Poinciana” which is known as one of the most striking trees in the subtropical climate region. Its vibrant crimson flowers symbolize pride, hope, and rest.

The author shares her thoughts and feelings, shaped by her life experiences, on every page of this book. May 2016, when she was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer where Fukuda recounts how she shifted her focus to planning how to live her remaining days to the fullest. She discovered a new perspective at the end of the tunnel, one that opened up both her body and mind.

Given her condition, living a normal life felt like searching for a needle in a haystack. She documented her joyful and challenging experiences while facing cancer through a daily journal on her tablet, which became the foundation of this book.

Fujie Fukuda aims to inspire others who are going through similar situations to take things one day at a time. She encourages readers not to let fear overwhelm them, even when circumstances seem impossible. Surrounding oneself with uplifting people is essential, and it’s important to remember that no one is alone in their struggles. She emphasizes that individuals are stronger than they realize and that there is life beyond pain. Embracing each moment and allowing oneself to feel every emotion is part of the journey. Even when resilience feels out of reach, there is hope, even in the darkest times. One day, readers will look back and see just how far they have come.
