As we look back on this unforgettable weekend, we invite you to join us in reliving the highlights of Citi of Books’ gallery during the 30th Los Angeles Times Festival of Books—a true celebration of the literary arts! A book included in the gallery was “Falling Is Not An Option: A Way to Lifelong Balance” by George Locker.

George Locker is a dedicated T’ai Chi Chuan practitioner and instructor whose journey began over 40 years ago when he was introduced to Cheng Hsiang Yu, a Grandmaster born in Shanghai, China. Their classes took place in a Buddhist Temple on New York’s Lower East Side, a fitting backdrop for the study of this ancient art.

Under Master Yu’s guidance, George and his fellow students witnessed their teacher’s remarkable vitality, as he continued to demonstrate strength and skill even at the age of 82. Inspired by Master Yu’s longevity and prowess, George has devoted himself to sharing the transformative benefits of T’ai Chi, emphasizing its role in achieving balance and stability throughout life.

“Falling Is Not an Option: A Way to Lifelong Balance” offers readers a profound exploration of the concept of balance, delving into its beauty, necessity, and the common challenges faced as we age. The book begins with an insightful discussion on the nature of balance, emphasizing the critical role of postural muscles—those involuntary muscles that maintain our stability.

The author highlights various weight-bearing sports that not only require balance but also enhance it, setting the stage for a deeper understanding of how we can cultivate this essential aspect of our physical well-being.

The second part of the book is a practical guide, featuring 15 postures and exercises derived from T’ai Chi, each illustrated with 122 sequential photos of the author. These exercises are designed to activate and strengthen the postural muscles, enabling readers to create downward force for increased stability. Importantly, the routines are accessible, requiring no memorization and can be performed at home, making them suitable for individuals with mobility impairments, including the elderly.

Locker’s clear and straightforward writing style, combined with his 40 years of T’ai Chi experience, lends authority to his guidance. The book concludes with a glossary of terms, ensuring that readers can easily understand the concepts presented. “Falling Is Not an Option” is not just a resource for those seeking to regain stability; it is groundbreaking work that promises to benefit mid-lifers, athletes, and health professionals alike, making it an invaluable reference for anyone looking to improve their balance and overall quality of life.
