As the fair celebrates another successful year of bringing together the brightest minds in publishing, Citi of Books proudly joins the festivities at the 77th Frankfurter Buchmesse, showcasing inspiring titles from its talented authors. Among the featured works in the Book Gallery is “Slipping the Grid: A Novel” by Elizabeth Reed — a continuation of the enchanting and introspective journey of Skylar, first introduced in The Ancient Echoes.
Elizabeth Reed is a retired Art Director. Graduated The Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Art Education with advanced studies at Georgia State University. A retired Department of Defense civilian, who worked in soldier and family arts and recreation programs in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Founding Executive Director of the Visual Art Center of Alaska, a cross-cultural program for professional Native American artists and sculptors. Author of Tinker, Ancient Echoes, and Slipping the Grid: A Novel.

“Slipping the Grid: A Novel” by Elizabeth Reed is a story infused with romance, art, and spiritual revelation, the novel weaves together themes of love, destiny, and the timeless search for self. Now an accomplished professor and authority on Native American art, Skylar returns to the United States after her transformative teaching experience in Japan. As she navigates a major career opportunity, she must also face the pull of her heart toward Takeo, her soul mate and the lover she left behind. Set against the rich cultural backdrop of Italy, Slipping the Grid explores the enduring question that so many women face—how to balance love, purpose, and personal freedom.
Italy becomes more than a setting—it is a catalyst for rediscovery. When Skylar and Takeo reunite for a holiday through Tuscany and Rome, their relationship is tested by distance, ambition, and the conflicting tides of modern life. Through their travels, Reed paints Italy in vivid, short story–like vignettes, capturing the magic of its landscapes, art, and history. From wine-soaked Tuscan hills to the awe-inspiring ruins of the Colosseum, every encounter deepens Skylar’s awareness of the eternal connection between love and spirit.
While exploring Rome’s Colosseo, a wave of déjà vu transports Skylar into a distant past—one where she recalls a life as an Etruscan gladiator, fierce and unyielding. Another vision reveals her as a foundling on the steps of Santa Croce in Florence, a woman navigating the splendor and constraints of the Renaissance. These glimpses into former lives illuminate how courage, creativity, and passion have shaped her soul across centuries. Skylar’s journey becomes a meditation on the ways art, history, and love intertwine to form the essence of who we are.
A seamless sequel to The Ancient Echoes, Slipping the Grid once again showcases Elizabeth Reed’s talent for blending history, mysticism, and romance into a narrative that feels both intimate and timeless. Through Skylar’s eyes, readers experience the allure of foreign lands, the echoes of past lives, and the universal struggle between heart and ambition. Thought-provoking yet tender, this novel invites readers to reflect on the choices that define us and the soulful connections that transcend time, distance, and even death.
