The author of the book “How God Works: How It All Started and What to Do about It,” Richard Schinke, was interviewed by Benji Cole of CBS Radio. They talked about the in-depth nature of the book’s theme and inspiration during the interview.

Schinke shared that the motivation for writing began with observing how many believers become disillusioned with God during hardship—often blaming Him for loss, silence, or tragedy. He felt compelled to offer a corrective. The inspiration emerged from a desire to guide others into understanding how God truly works: not arbitrarily, but according to a divine plan that honors prayer, values honesty, and leans into restoration.

“How God Works: How It All Started and What to Do about It” by Richard Schinke is a concise but powerful exploration of God’s unchanging nature and His intentional design for humanity. In just 50 odd pages, author Dick Schinke challenges misconceptions about divine silence or cruelty—especially in the face of tragedy—and offers clarity on how God interacts with people when they cry out. Rather than viewing God as distant or punitive, the book presents Him as a deliberate Creator whose relationship with mankind is organized, purposeful, and deeply loving.

Richard Schinke is married to his wonderful wife, Donna, and together they have four grown children and five grandchildren. Currently residing in Mesa, Arizona, he has been a devoted follower of Jesus for nearly fifty years, having accepted Him as his Savior through the ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. Throughout his journey, he has engaged in various forms of ministry. In the early years, he was a member of a small Christian band that performed in churches and other Christian organizations. Richard also ministered solo, writing and singing his own songs. His involvement extended to serving on the worship team of a church in Arizona, where he was later called to pastor two of their mission churches.

In his compelling booklet, How God Works, Richard Schinke offers readers a clear and logical presentation of the gospel, thoughtfully crafted for those who earnestly seek truth. His goal is to communicate the message of Christ in a way that resonates deeply with serious spiritual inquirers. Richard believes that when the gospel is shared with clarity and intentionality, it naturally invites individuals to make a personal decision to accept Christ as their Savior. He hopes this resource will not only deepen understanding but also empower others to share the gospel with confidence and compassion.

At the heart of “How God Works” lies one of the most difficult and often heartbreaking questions believers face: Why does God seem silent when we need Him most? Richard confronts this emotional and spiritual dilemma head-on, acknowledging the frustration and sorrow many feel when prayers go seemingly unanswered—especially in moments of intense suffering, such as the tragic loss of a child.

Rather than accepting the belief that God is indifferent or unresponsive, Schinke challenges that narrative by offering a deeper perspective. He portrays God not as distant or disconnected, but as a purposeful and attentive Creator who invites humanity into relationship and alignment with His divine order.

Through historical and spiritual insights, Richard unpacks the nature of God’s engagement with the world, showing that divine silence is not abandonment—but often an invitation to trust and grow. He encourages readers to shift their understanding and begin cooperating with God’s ways, learning to live in harmony with His purpose rather than struggling against what they do not yet understand.

“How God Works” is more than a theological reflection; it is a guide for navigating life’s toughest moments with faith, wisdom, and spiritual clarity. Ideal for personal reflection or as a resource for ministry, Richard Schinke’s work speaks to those who long for answers—and the courage to keep seeking them.
