“Arithmetic Counts!: Why Americans Have Trouble with Math and How to Fix It” by Dr. Paul Shoecraft was Showcased at the 2025 Beijing International Book Fair – Book Gallery

The Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) is a remarkable celebration of literature, showcasing an impressive collection of over 220,000 titles that highlight both Chinese and international works. As the world’s second-largest book fair and Asia’s most influential publishing event, BIBF serves as a vital platform for cultural exchange and academic publishing, drawing numerous exhibitors and visitors from around the globe each year.

From June 18-22, 2025, the BIBF opened its doors for its 31st edition, welcoming book enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds to immerse themselves in the world of literature.

Citi of Books (COB) was thrilled to be part of this prestigious event! Traveling all the way from Albuquerque to Beijing, COB proudly featured 14 remarkable titles from our talented authors. Among the standout selections that captivated attendees with its insightful approach was “Arithmetic Counts!: Why Americans Have Trouble with Math and How to Fix It” by Dr. Paul Shoecraft.

Dr. Paul Shoecraft is a pioneering mathematician who has taken a serious look at the teaching of arithmetic, a subject often overlooked since the Progressive Education era began in 1880. In his book “Arithmetic Counts,” he argues that traditional textbook-based math programs in American elementary schools are hindering children’s mathematical development.

Shoecraft aims to ignite a new wave of national math reform, similar to the New Math movement of the 1960s, but focused on equipping elementary school teachers with effective strategies to make arithmetic a success for all students.

His breakthrough approach emphasizes understanding over memorization, teaching children the underlying principles of arithmetic rather than simply drilling them on additional problems. By making learning engaging through games, songs, and movement, Shoecraft demonstrates that virtually all children can grasp arithmetic, which serves as the foundation for algebra, higher mathematics, and even fields like science and music.

“Arithmetic Counts!: Why Americans Have Trouble with Math and How to Fix It” highlights the essential role of arithmetic in mastering STEM disciplines, asserting that proficiency in mathematics begins with a solid understanding of arithmetic. He echoes the sentiment of Bill Gates, noting that every successful scientist, technician, engineer, or mathematician relies on arithmetic, underscoring its critical importance in both academic and professional settings.

One of the key features of Shoecraft’s book is the introduction of MOVE IT Math, a methodology he developed over 50 years ago, which has proven effective in enhancing mathematical understanding.

In a world where challenges can often feel overwhelming, Dr. Shoecraft draws inspiration from the words of Charles M. Schulz, creator of Peanuts: “No problem is too big to run away from.” This quote serves as a motivational reminder that every problem, including the difficulties faced in math education, has a solution.

Despite its potential, MOVE IT Math remains largely unknown, leaving a gap in America’s educational system. Shoecraft calls for a reevaluation of traditional teaching methods and encourages readers to embrace innovative approaches to math education, ultimately paving the way for a brighter future in STEM fields.
