American Library Association 2025 Book Gallery Highlight: “I Heal You With My Hands” by Robert Ackerman

As the 2025 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference came to an end, excitement built for an event that promised to be both dynamic and transformative. Set against the backdrop of the Pennsylvania Convention Center last June 26-30, this year’s conference served as a vital gathering for thousands of library professionals and advocates from around the globe.

The ALA dedicated to enhancing learning and ensuring access to information for all, embodied this mission through thought-provoking sessions and meaningful community connections. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with forward-thinking librarians, explore innovative ideas, and collaborate on strategies that would shape the future of libraries.

In response to the growing challenges faced by libraries, including an unprecedented surge in book challenges, the ALA developed a comprehensive clearinghouse of resources to support library professionals and advocates. This initiative empowered attendees to navigate these challenges effectively, ensuring that the fundamental right to access diverse literature was upheld.

Citi of Books (COB) was thrilled to be part of this prestigious event representing 18 books from our remarkable authors! Among the standout selections that made a memorable impression with its insightful approach was “I Heal You With My Hands” by Robert Ackerman.

Vietnam Veteran Robert Ackerman was Director of the Pennington County Drug and Alcohol Task Force, Director of the Meade Street Halfway House, Director of the Western South Dakota Referees Association, Director of Keystone Ambulance Service, Director of the West Dakota Water Development Association.

He was a Rockerville, SD Volunteer Fireman for seven years. He coached a soccer team to win the Dakota State Soccer Tournament. He hung clothes at the Salvation Army, and he has researched climate change for 30 years. In his bio he speaks of things he experienced and learned about the world including where the world is headed.

In “I Heal You With My Hands,” the author brings the readers into his intriguing life, marked by personal struggles and profound insights. Opening with a reflection on the Chinese curse of living an “interesting life,” Ackerman shares his journey from Rapid City to the Michael J. Fitzmaurice State Veterans Home, where he confronts challenges such as PTSD, COPD, and depression.

Despite these obstacles, he believes in the divine purpose behind his experiences, asserting that God has guided him to heal with his hands. The prologue sets the tone for a narrative that blends personal anecdotes with spiritual revelations, encouraging readers to consider the significance of faith and healing in their own lives.

While some may dismiss his message due to rigid dogmas, Ackerman’s heartfelt account serves as a reminder of the transformative power of belief and the potential for redemption, urging us to embrace the truth of our existence and the choices we make in this life and beyond.

As we looked back on this year’s event, we were eager to continue building connections and advocating for access to diverse narratives in every library across the nation, sparking conversations that inspired fresh insights and impactful action.
