The author of the book “The Panacea Doctor,” Andrew I. Schafer was interviewed by Benji Cole of CBS Radio. They talked about the in-depth nature of the book’s theme and inspiration during the interview. Andrew I. Schafer’s inspiration for writing “The Panacea Doctor: The Mysterious Disappearance of a Beloved Physician” came from a memory he carried with him since his high school years in Tallahassee, Florida. During that time, he had a close friend who shared his habit of reading the newspaper every day. One particular headline in the Tallahassee Democrat stayed with him: a report about a body that had washed ashore on a beach in Apalachicola along the Gulf of Mexico. The condition of the body made identification difficult, leaving questions about the person’s identity. This real-life report eventually became the starting point for the mystery behind his novel.

Although Schafer had spent much of his medical career writing and publishing medical textbooks, he had long wanted to explore fiction and write novels. However, his demanding professional responsibilities left him with little time to pursue that ambition for many years. About five years ago, he finally made a commitment to writing during his weekends, working day and night to bring his stories to life. His efforts led to the publication of Unclean Hands, a historical fiction novel that received positive reviews and encouraged him to continue writing. With that experience behind him, Schafer turned to the memory of the unidentified body he had read about as a teenager, developing it into the foundation of The Panacea Doctor, a novel that blends a long-held memory with historical fiction and mystery.

The Panacea Doctor: The Mysterious Disappearance of a Beloved Physician by Andrew I. Schafer takes readers to Florida’s Panhandle in the 1960s, where a respected doctor’s sudden disappearance turns a quiet community’s trust into a search for answers. Set against a time of racial tension, political upheaval, and social change, the novel follows Dr. Ernest Peltz, a German physician admired by the people of Panacea and nearby Apalachicola for his remarkable medical skills and compassionate care.

For years, Dr. Peltz has been someone the community can depend on. That sense of security begins to unravel after he falls mysteriously ill during a Passover dinner. His disappearance soon raises questions that no one seems prepared to answer. As people try to piece together what happened, the image they have built of the beloved physician starts to look less certain. What begins as a search for a missing doctor gradually develops into a mystery filled with unexpected discoveries and troubling possibilities.

The investigation takes a darker turn as local authorities and the FBI look more closely into Dr. Peltz’s past. Questions about his identity lead to unsettling connections involving possible covert CIA mind-control experiments and a history linked to the Holocaust. These revelations bring another layer to the story, challenging the characters to reconsider what they thought they knew about the man they trusted. At the same time, the racial prejudice and social divisions of the Civil Rights era shape the world around them, adding to the tension and showing how easily assumptions can influence people’s judgment.

With its mix of historical intrigue, medical elements, political questions, and suspense, The Panacea Doctor: The Mysterious Disappearance of a Beloved Physician offers more than a mystery to solve. It invites readers to look beyond appearances and consider how history, identity, and personal secrets can shape the way people see one another. As the truth surrounding Dr. Peltz slowly comes into focus, the novel leaves readers to reflect on the difficult questions that emerge when the person everyone believes they know turns out to have a far more complicated story.
