Attending book events like the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books continues to play an important role in connecting stories with readers. It opens doors for collaboration, discovery, and inspiration that go beyond the pages of a book. As Citi of Books carries this momentum forward, readers are invited to explore featured titles in their Book Gallery, including “Stalemate” by Garry Smith and Danny Arnold.

Garry Smith and his wife Charlotte have lived in Starkville, Mississippi for over forty years. They have been married for over fifty years. They have two sons, two grandsons, and two granddaughters. Garry was raised on a farm and worked many other jobs, including each summer for five years on offshore oil platforms. His adult life was mainly spent teaching management at the university level. He co-authored many textbooks and novels with Danny.

Danny Arnold and his wife of over fifty years, Peggy, live in Winston Salem, NC. They live near their son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Danny was raised on a plantation in Louisiana. His career was primarily spent in higher education as a faculty member and administrator. He is the author of numerous management, leadership, and marketing textbooks. His first western fiction, Bad Cat Jones, was published in 2021. He has also co-authored many novels with Garry.

“Stalemate” by Garry Smith and Danny Arnold is a gripping work of historical fiction that reimagines one of the most defining events in American history—the American Civil War. Instead of the familiar outcome, the novel explores an alternate reality where the war ends not in victory, but in a draw—a stalemate that reshapes the future of an entire nation. Blending elements of Western storytelling with political and military drama, the book offers a compelling “what if” scenario that challenges readers to reconsider history and its consequences.

It is both imaginative and grounded, presenting a world that feels strikingly plausible despite its divergence from reality. For readers who enjoy historical fiction with a twist, the novel offers both intellectual intrigue and emotional engagement. It challenges assumptions about history while delivering a story rich in character, conflict, and imagination.
