David Arieti has dedicated nearly four decades to environmental research and education. He earned a BA in Science Area Major from the University of Denver and an MS in Marine Science from Long Island University. His early career included research on algal growth in the Sea of Galilee and studies on the effects of chlorine-produced oxidants in Chesapeake Bay. He later worked in Washington D.C. consulting on pesticide fate, occupational health in textile production, and food additives. As research director at the Baltimore Environmental Center, he addressed hazardous waste issues and studied fish populations affected by the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in New York. Alongside his research, Arieti has taught Environmental Science and Biology as an adjunct professor at multiple colleges in Maryland and Illinois, earning three Teacher-of-the-Year awards.

Arieti is also an accomplished author, beginning with his 2005 book The Earth is My Patient, which examines the causes and effects of environmental pollution and explores possible solutions. Motivated by humanity’s worsening impact on the planet, he continues to write, collaborating with doctors and an illustrator on a new book that highlights humankind’s potential slide toward extinction. He advocates for radical environmental and social reforms, including ending fossil fuel use, limiting overpopulation, investing heavily in solar energy, demilitarizing the planet, and even rethinking the economic system to ensure better health and living conditions for the poor.
