The author of the book “Kristina’s Cache: A Memoir of Adventure and Survival in Alaska” Kristina Ahlnäs, was interviewed by Benji Cole of CBS Radio. They talked about the in-depth nature of the book’s theme and inspiration during the interview. Kristina shared her experiences and the other things while building that cache.
“Kristina’s Cache: A Memoir of Adventure and Survival in Alaska” by Kristina Ahlnäs isn’t just a travel story or a personal diary — it’s the account of a life lived boldly in one of Earth’s toughest places. It follows Ahlnäs from her roots in Finland all the way to the icy vastness of Alaska, where she became an oceanographer, adventurer, and eventually, a true pioneer of her own story. What makes this memoir unique is its mix of grit, heart, ingenuity, and moments that feel stranger than fiction — from the challenge of building a home out of logs to seeing UFO-like lights in the northern sky.
Kristina Ahlnäs grew up in Finland during World War II, where her time as a Girl Scout taught her resilience, initiative, and practical problem-solving. Guided by strong faith, she believes that even seemingly impossible challenges can be overcome through prayer and trust in God and Jesus.
She studied Geophysics–Oceanography at the University of Helsinki, overcoming gender barriers that limited opportunities at the time. An ASLA–Fulbright scholarship brought her to the United States to study at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. After working in Seattle and Sweden, she eventually settled in Alaska, where she lived for more than fifty years. Her book reflects selected experiences from three decades of her life there.
This isn’t a dusty history book. It’s a hands-on look at life in an unforgiving landscape, told by someone who didn’t just survive — she built a life there. Readers of adventure, memoir, and frontier narratives will gravitate toward Ahlnäs’s warm voice, her moments of laughter, and the raw realities of long Alaskan winters where cars refuse to start and houses are as rare as sunshine.
Kristina’s story is packed with lessons about resilience and adaptability. When she arrives in Alaska in 1969, she steps into a rugged world where extreme cold, isolation, and daily survival are real challenges. Renting old cabins with frozen pipes, living in tents, and struggling through sub-zero temperatures teach her something most of us will never face: survival isn’t theoretical, it’s physical and mental.
As the years go by, she doesn’t just endure; she thrives. Kristina buys land, builds an 8-by-8-foot “cache” cabin to practice her skills, and eventually completes a full log home. These projects become metaphors for her life in Alaska — small beginnings, lots of sweat, little help from modern comforts, and all the joy and frustration that come with building something meaningful.
This book is a must-read for anyone who loves real-life adventure, frontier challenges, and stories that remind us why we chase our dreams. It’s about courage, community, and finding home in the most unexpected places.
