Citi of Books proudly launches the AI Audiobook of of Kathy Pounds Graham’s “Hearts Of Gold – Broken Bodies: Shaped by Challenge,” now available for listeners everywhere.
Kathy Pounds Graham is a pioneer in the fight for Equality in the Field of Disabilities. She had a vision that her sons & others would have the same opportunities in life their able-bodied peers enjoyed.” Because of her vision, dedication, determination and faith in God, many opportunities for people with disabilities were created. Many of these opportunities she and her sons planted seeds for have come to fruition and allow people to live, work, recreate and participate in life next to their peers.
Although her sons are no longer with us Kathy continues the legacy she and her sons began in 1974. She continues to educate the public about the world of disabilities Through. The Eyes of she and her sons as they made history. Submitted by Vicki Killingsworth, Master’s degree in education, fellow advocate and coworker.
“Hearts Of Gold – Broken Bodies: Shaped by Challenge” opens with Kathy’s reflections on raising them with determination, faith, and love, never allowing their disabilities to define or limit their potential.
From their early years, the boys were full of energy, curiosity, and resilience, teaching their mother and those around them that possibilities are endless when approached with courage and creativity.
The story traces Kathy’s advocacy journey, beginning in the 1980s when she became involved in national efforts for children with special needs. Her testimony before U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop and her work with state leaders shaped early intervention programs in Mississippi. Alongside her professional advocacy, Kathy shares candid family stories—Jason’s daring stunts in his wheelchair, Shawn’s thoughtful observations, and the community support they found in Pearl and later in Waynesboro. These anecdotes highlight both the challenges and joys of everyday life, underscoring the strength of family bonds and the importance of inclusion.
As Shawn and Jason grew into adulthood, they achieved milestones many thought impossible. They attended school with their peers, joined in sports, volunteered in their community, and even became the first participants in Mississippi’s Home of Your Own program, purchasing their own home. Their ministry, GOAL (Glorify Our Amazing Lord), reflected their strong faith and desire to inspire others. Kathy paints a portrait of her sons as men who lived fully, with humor, faith, and unshakable brotherhood.
The most painful part of the book recounts their final journey during the COVID-19 era. Jason endured a series of medical crises that eventually led to his passing in July 2022. Only weeks later, Shawn—unable to bear life without his younger brother—died unexpectedly. Kathy describes her devastation, but also her conviction that her sons are together, whole and free in the presence of God. This section is both heartbreaking and uplifting, framed by faith and the belief that love transcends death.
“Hearts Of Gold – Broken Bodies: Shaped by Challenge” by Kathy Pounds Graham concludes with heartfelt testimonials from caregivers, friends, ministers, and family, who describe Shawn and Jason as men of faith, humor, and inspiration. Kathy closes with her own tribute, expressing gratitude for the ways her sons reshaped her life and deepened her faith. “Hearts of Gold” is ultimately a testament to unconditional love, resilience in the face of adversity, and the enduring impact of two young men who touched countless lives.
