As the fair celebrates another successful year of bringing together the brightest minds in publishing, Citi of Books proudly joins the festivities at the 77th Frankfurter Buchmesse, showcasing inspiring titles from its talented authors. Among the featured works in the Book Gallery is “The Birds of Paradise Hike in a Mushroom Woods” by Carolyn Gora — a joyful children’s book circles on a family of birds as they go in a birdcation into a mushroom woods.
Carolyn Gora was a Florida public school art teacher. During her career she taught elementary, middle, and high school students. She also taught elementary education university students how to incorporate art into their classroom lessons. She has been painting animal characters for over fifty years. The Birds of Paradise Hike in a Mushroom Woods is her third book.
She has introduced her two other books, The Almost True Story of Birds of Paradise and The Birds of Paradise Visit a Fern Forest, to children in schools, summer camps by reading the books and art activities. The first book was written so her grandchildren would be able to read the story by themselves. She got the idea for her three books from her own Bird of Paradise Plants, which when in bloom, resemble birds.

“The Birds of Paradise Hike in a Mushroom Woods” is a delightful journey into a whimsical world where nature and imagination intertwine. As the family of bird hike through this magical landscape, the birds encounter a variety of creatively imagined “animal mushrooms,” each one playfully paired with a visual representation of its namesake animal. From the majestic Lion’s Mane to the quirky Alligator Mushroom, each encounter is not only a feast for the eyes but also an opportunity for children to learn about the fascinating world of fungi, distinguishing them from plants in a fun and engaging way.
As the adventure unfolds, the birds’ playful exploration culminates in a heartwarming twist when one of them secretly brings home a Pig’s Ear mushroom. This whimsical act of curiosity leads to the planting of the mushroom in their garden, allowing them to join their collection of animal-themed plants.
The story beautifully blends the fantastical elements of animal plants and fungi, creating a vibrant tapestry of nature that sparks curiosity and wonder in young minds. With its light-hearted tone and educational undertones, “The Birds of Paradise Hike in a Mushroom Woods” is not just a story; it’s an invitation for children to explore the wonders of the natural world, fostering a love for both reading and the environment.
