Dr. Yash P. Soni’s family hails from Nalagarh, a small town in the state of Himachal Pradesh (H.P.) in India. Early in his life, his father moved to Shimla, which was the official capital of the British Raj at the time, in search of better opportunities. There, he started his business as a textile merchant. It was in Shimla that he was born. The city, which was more urban in nature, had been referred to by the British as their summer capital.

After completing high school in Shimla, Soni’s family relocated to New Delhi, the present-day capital of India. It was in New Delhi that he continued his education and graduated from Delhi University in 1966. Soon after, he set his sights on moving abroad for further studies, determined to go to the UK with the aim to both earn and learn.
