Melanie L. Houston endeavors to live life with these words in mind. With more than 25 years of publishing experience, she established Alabaster Box Media Group, a boutique Christian multimedia publishing group, in 2012. Her passion is to marry art and literature while speaking to contemporary spiritual and social issues.

To give back and make an impact, Melanie fuses her writing and consulting experience to develop and manage grant writing processes for nonprofit organizations that uplift and inspire change within the communities they serve. Through My Afrikah Hair, she extends her poetic voice, reach and audience while featuring the art of Bahamian native Philece Roberts. Melanie and her husband, Dan, treasure their covenant journey with family (including three phenomenal grandchildren) and friends throughout the United States and The Bahamas.

Our hair is our crown of glory and narrates different people’s stories.

“My Afrikah Hair” by Melanie L. Houston is a poetic book that suggests ways to cherish and celebrate your Afrikah Hair. Through engaging storytelling and vibrant illustrations, the book explores themes of self-love, pride, and individuality, appreciating natural hair and embracing cultural identity while connecting it to the African heritage.

The author encourages self-assurance and serves as a reminder to young girls and boys, family members, teachers, and mentors that we bear God’s image. If you are embarrassed with your hair or skin color, this book reminds you to embrace and love your features and helps you navigate societal pressures around appearance and beauty standards.
