How far will you go to get your hands dirty for someone?

“A Lighter Shade of Gray” by Dennis Jung is an appealing fictional story focused on Lilly DeFranco, a fearless escape from the prison of Arizona in her search for redemption (The Uneven Surface of the Soul). She resembles the shade gray, which stands between white and black, neither good nor bad. As the story unfolds, Lilly shows her determination to start a new life and have a lighter shade of heart. After stumbling, chewed in and spit out a couple of times, and rose again.

This narrative aims to be a powerful example to the readers of how someone can always repent their mistakes. “Un Cuento Chino,” mentioned in the book, means that life has a lot of blind curves and unexpected developments. In the same way, Lilly moved toward a lighter shade of gray after acknowledging her moral failings and accepting her past.

“You can’t let what happened in the past define you.”
